The Brandenburg Gate Is Closed

The Brandenburg Gate Is Closed

One of Berlin's, and indeed one of Europe's, most famous and moving landmarks, the Brandenburg Gate stood inside the No Man's Land between the outer Wall and the inner Wall, making it inaccessible to East and West alike. In 1963, when President John F. Kennedy visited the Gate, East Germany hung huge red banners across it so he couldn't look into East Berlin.
