Frozen Corpses in the Battle of the Bulge, 1944

Frozen corpses of German soldiers, killed by a single American machinegunner during the Battle of the Bulge, line the side of a Belgian road in December, 1944. The last-ditch counteroffensive by Nazi forces took more American lives than any other engagement in World War II. The official U.S. casualty count was 80,987, with 19,000 dead. Combined casualties from both sides numbered nearly 190,000.
