A 'Stand-Up Sit-In'

Activists participate in a "stand-up sit-in" at a segregated Virginia lunch counter. The students and civil rights demonstrators who took part in these sorts of protests often faced violent reactions from the local community, and (not infrequently) from local law enforcement.
