This was the year that Williams, 22, became the last player to hit .400. Rather than sit out a doubleheader on the final day of the season and guarantee that he'd finish hitting exactly .400, Williams characteristically insisted on playing—and went 6-for-8 to finish with the now legendary (and never-since-matched) .406 average.
