Bird Flu Around the Globe

Keeping an Eye on Bird Flu

Keeping an Eye on Bird Flu

Avian Influenza, or bird flu, is an infection caused by viruses occuring naturally among wild bird populations. It's highly contagious (among birds) and can kill some domesticated fowl. The risk to humans from bird flu is, generally, quite low for the simple reason that the viruses don't usually usually infect people. That said, confirmed cases of human infection have been reported since 1997.
