"I don't have to believe what they believe," Karen says of the Klan and, by extension, all of the people and groups he has documented and chronicled in his photography. "But I feel obliged to observe without judgment. I do get invited to events, to rallies, and if I'm not invited, I always ask if it's okay if I show up. I never just go and start shooting. You need to develop a relationship, of sorts, before poking a camera in someone's face."
