Not too many people these days mention him when discussing the greatest college coaches in history, but the long-time Kansas coach, nicknamed "Phog," was for years known as the "Father of Basketball Coaching." Allen (here demonstrating a funky move to a rapt trio) coached Dean Smith; he recruited Wilt Chamberlain to Kansas; the Jayhawks' famous Allen Fieldhouse is named for him, and a banner hanging there reads, "Pay heed all who enter, beware of the Phog." In 1959 Allen was enshrined as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame's inaugural class. Beware the Phog, indeed!
