Fidel Castro and Comrades, Before Moncada

Fidel Castro (center, standing) with comrades in Los Palos, Cuba, in July, 1953, shortly before their July 26 attack on the government's Moncada military garrison -- often cited as the first battle of the Cuban revolution. The garrison housed troops loyal to Cuba's president, Fulgencio Batista, a corrupt, right-wing thug who took control of the government in a 1952 military coup.
