Adolf Hitler

Hitler, the Austrian-born German leader of the National Socialist German Workers, or Nazi, Party, ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945 -- as chancellor from 1933 to 1945 and as the sole and supreme head of state or Führer from 1934 to 1945. During World War II -- a conflict that began when German troops invaded Poland in 1939 and in which 60 million people died -- Nazi forces systematically killed as many as 17 million civilians.
