Woodstock: One Photographer’s Trip

John Dominis, Photographer

John Dominis, Photographer

The great LIFE photographer John Dominis as a young man, on assigment. Of this portrait, Dominis says: "I chose this picture because I think I look like I could be camping out at Woodstock -- ready to partake in the peaceful fair and music. Actually, though, in this photo I am in Sumatra in 1958, where I covered the rebellion of Sumatra colonels against the Indonesian army. Equipped with wine, tinned foie gras, a blanket, and a pillow, I'm ready to go by bus down the island to the battle ground. The bus couldn't leave until all the seats were sold, so I bought them all, and off we went."
