A far-better-than-average player for the Dodgers teams of the 1950s, Hodges played the central role in one of the most memorable moments in Mets history. In a July game in 1969, left fielder Cleon Jones failed to hustle after a ball hit to the outfield, and Hodges immediately decided to take him out of the game. But he didn't just signal for Jones to come out of the game; he walked slowly all the way out to the outfield, and walked with Jones all the way back to the bench. Jones never dogged it on any play again the entire year, and was one of the heroes of the Mets' World Series win.
