"In the early sixties, with Studebaker in serious financial straits, Loewy was asked to design a stylish sports car for the once-powerful automaker. He assembled a team in a Palm Springs bungalow and worked non-stop for 40 days to design the Avanti, an at-once gorgeous and stark-looking coupe with a striking, asymmetrical hood bulge. If Loewy were still alive, he'd surely be aghast at so many of the bland, soap-bars-on-wheels that people drive today without a smidgen of shame."
